Ultra-High Density Energy Storage and Design of. Porous Materials
Carl Brozek, Chemistry

Students will synthesize and design a new family of high-energy-density electrolytes for energy storage and conversion applications including redox flow batteries, supercapacitors, and thermogalvanic heat engines. Summer researchers will gain experience in air-free synthetic techniques, electrochemical characterization tools, and a suite of physical methods including UV-vis, mid-IR, NMR, and EPR spectroscopy. In particular, students will synthesize ionic liquids, which are a fascinating class of liquid-phase salts, that incorporate redox-active ions. Exploration into redox-active ionic liquids has only just begun in labs around the world. The Brozek Lab will be the first to understand their basic properties and how they could be used in next-generation energy technology.
